A Simple Guide to Intimate Lubricant

Lubricant is one of the easiest ways to make intimate wellness more comfortable. It reduces friction, feels kinder on the skin, and can make both solo time and shared time more enjoyable.

You don’t need to know every type on the market. A few basics are enough.

1. Why people use it
Even when the body is ready, extra slip can make things more comfortable. That’s especially true if you’re using a product, if skin feels dry, or if you simply prefer a smoother feel.

There’s nothing “wrong” if you want to use lube. It’s a comfort choice, not a sign that something is missing.

2. The main types
Water-based: The most common everyday option. Easy to clean, usually fine with body-safe silicone products, and a good place to start.

Silicone-based: Longer-lasting and very slippery. Generally not used with silicone products, as it can damage the surface. Better with glass, steel, or skin-only use.

Hybrid: A mix of water and silicone. Check the label if you’re pairing it with a silicone product.

If you’re unsure, water-based is the simplest starting point.

3. Anal lube is different
Anal lube is not the same as everyday or “regular” lube.

The tissue there doesn’t self-lubricate in the same way, so more slip — and slip that lasts — is usually needed. Anal formulas are typically thicker and longer-lasting so they don’t dry out as quickly. Regular lube can feel too thin for that use and may need topping up often, which can be less comfortable.

If that’s the kind of play you have in mind, look for a product labelled for anal use rather than assuming any lube will do the same job. Still match it to your product material (water-based with silicone products, unless the label says otherwise).

4. What to look for
Choose something body-safe and, where possible, free from strong fragrance. Scented or flavoured options can be fun for some people, but unscented is often gentler on sensitive skin.

A little goes a long way. You can always add more.

5. How it fits with products
Match the lube to the material:
- Silicone products → water-based
- Glass or stainless steel → water-based or silicone-based
- If the product page specifies a type, follow that.

6. Keep it simple
You don’t need a large collection. One reliable water-based lube is enough for most people starting out. Add a thicker anal formula only if you need it.

Comfort is the goal. If it feels better with lube, that’s a good enough reason to use it.
